GHS serves people who have Medicaid insurance or are covered by Healthy Michigan, those enrolled in the MI CHILD program, or people who have no insurance and cannot pay for services but meet eligibility requirements. Services are provided for those with mental illnesses, developmental disabilities, substance use disorders, and co-occurring (mental health and substance use) disorders.
GHS refers most people who have other insurance to agencies that are connected to that insurance group. Under special circumstances, GHS may provide specialty services to some people who have insurance.
Michigan has a managed care delivery system for mental health and substance use disorder services. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) sets rules and regulations that we must follow. This includes the types of services that are provided and the criteria used to determine if someone qualifies to receive services. Medicaid recipients are guaranteed to receive services that are medically necessary.
