GHS is collaborating with the Greater Flint Health Coalition (GFHC) and the Genesee County Health Department (GCHD) to launch the “Health Happens Here – Flint & Genesee County” campaign. The concept behind the original program from The California Endowment is that your zip code shouldn’t determine how long you live, but it does. It challenges people to think about the social determinants of health – factors beyond just doctor visits and diets. A wider set of forces like safety, transportation, access to education, environmental conditions, availability of jobs, and local politics around resource allocation all have an impact on health outcomes for a community. The campaign empowers communities to make health happen where residents live, learn, work, and play.
This project fits in with a commitment GHS has made through our participation in a state-wide Integrated Health Learning Community to improve behavioral and physical health integration so people don’t fall through the cracks. “Health Happens Here” specifically relates to the objective of looking at opportunities to bring more prevention-focused efforts to a larger percentage of persons served and the community at large.
